Our smart phones are full of demands. Once a handy tool that merged the bulky desktop computer with our day to day communication needs, it's now packed with an endless array of apps and means of connecting which require constant interaction. Views, shares, and likes fuel an attention economy whose success depends on a perpetual, hypnotic engagement.

In close proximity to the planned chaos of social media are our cell phone cameras. Sometimes feeding the beast and testing the worth of an image within the flood of the endless scroll, the pictures stored there are also shared among friends, outside of the hyper-scrutinized realm of social media systems of instant valuation and exchange.  

Tapping into what might be considered an informal archive of contemporary vernacular photography which defies easy categorization, Social Photography offers in-person engagement with an exhibition of cell phone pictures from over 200 participants. Emphasizing sensibility, humor, and attention to the everyday moment rather than formal or professional ambitions, the show provides a kind of alternative to the constant flow of cell phone images scrolled through online.

In a social and political moment that nearly defies comprehension for its norm shattering hostility to governance and profit-seeking transgressions, Social Photography XII may be most notable for what it doesn’t show. With many of the images reflecting on quotidian moments and offering close scrutiny to the ordinary and everyday, a kind of pensive mood punctuated by moments of relief through humor prevails. 

Presented both online and in an exhibition format, the images are generously donated to us from among the Carriage Trade (and this year Montez Press Radio) communities, then formatted as prints and sold in editions to provide vital support for our programming. Now in its 12th year, the project continues its mission to foster and maintain cultural communities in support of in-person engagement, and we remain enormously grateful to all the participants and supporters who help make Social Photography and on our ongoing work at Carriage Trade possible.

The exhibition will be open at Emily Harvey Foundation from 1-6pm Wednesday - Saturday, March 24-28, with a benefit raffle event Saturday, March 28, 2026, 5:00-8:00 pm. Details below:
